Application Process

In order to enter the HMBA program, an applicant has to pass the entrance examination. For international students, we basically offer two different types of examination.

(1) Ordinary Examination

In the first stage of the examination, an applicant takes a written test and answers in Japanese. The written test is composed of two parts: (1) English or mathematics, (2) short thesis. Non-Japanese applicants are evaluated by the same criteria as Japanese applicants. An applicant who passes the first stage moves to the second stage and has an interview in Japanese. The application process is dealt with only at the Kunitachi campus in Tokyo.

(2) Special Examination for International Students

N1 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a necessary condition to apply for the Special Examination for International Students. A person who does not have a valid certificate at the N1 level cannot apply for this examination.

In the first stage of the examination, we carefully examine and evaluate submitted documents including an essay and study plan. An applicant who passes the first stage moves on to the second stage and has an interview in Japanese. The interview is conducted not only at the Kunitachi campus but also in Beijing, China and in Hanoi, Vietnam, and an applicant who lives in those countries can choose the local interview site. (Note, however, that an interview site outside of Japan is available only to applicants who hold the nationality of the country of the interview site and do not live in Japan when they apply for the examination.) We plan to extend the interview sites outside of Japan to other Asian countries such as Thailand and Indonesia.

You can apply for both types of examination in the same academic year if you satisfy the necessary conditions. However, whichever type of exam you take, a high level of Japanese language proficiency is required to study in HMBA.
